So, I join the Peace Corps not expecting to see any of my close friends and family for the next two years, especially not anyone from the states that i would know or with whom i'd be connected.
However, in my year here in Bolivia i've learned that the world isn't that big after all. My first experience with this was when i went to visit a fellow volunteer at his workplace (which i now work at) Villa Amistad, an orphange funded by various churches all over the U.S. To my suprise when i visited him there was a young missionary there who happened to be from Nashville, TN!!! What was even crazier was that he went to the same highshcool with the girls that lived with me my first year of college at UTK and knew of them.
My second experience (and the only one i need to forever remember the world is a small place) is when a group of us tried out a new Indian restaurant in Cochabamba. We were sitting and chatting and one of my friends told me that one of the waiters was from M'boro, TN. I thought, "sure, whatever, he just likes to say that b/c he likes to say the word "Murfreesboro" in a southern accent whenever he talks to me." However, i asked the waiter and in deed he was from M'boro! Actually he was from Knoxville, but went to MTSU. Crazy, right?! Living in Bolivia and of all the places to have a connection to, he has one to Murfreesboro, TN (my fabulous hometown!). He told me he came down here to Bolivia by falling in love with a Latina from Mexcio and just sorta kept making his way down South and ended up here. He's lived here since 1997 or something like that.
So, to end this crazy little story, I just want ya'll to know, that wherever you go, no matter what you think, feel, or care about where you're from, your hometown will always be with you; so be proud of it and look for the best in it. For a time i was so ready to get out of M'boro b/c i don't know why, but everyday that i'm here i realize that everything that is a part of me and who i am is there, and i miss you all and the town very very much.
Take care and i'll be writing again really soon!
abrazos y besos!
