Carnaval

I spent my first Carnaval celebration in Oruro, BO and had a super fun time. For those of you who don’t know what Carnaval’s about, it has something to do with the Catholic religion and Lent. I think Carnaval is traditionally held the week before Lent begins and is a time for everyone to get all of their naughtiest sins out of them before they swear giving up something for a month. I was too lazy to look up the true history behind Carnaval, so don’t take my explanation as concrete facts.
These are some pics of some guys and gals of Peace Corps dancin’ away in the parade. (sorry Clayton and Dan, I couldn’t get any good pics of ya’1l) They didn’t start dancing until 1:30AM and ended at around 5:30AM!!! It was freezing by the time they finished and for some parts of the dance they danced bare foot. (They’re holding their shoes in most of the pics, crazy!) In one of the pics you can see Kerby’s bare, right foot.

I have more pics, but will be uploading them onto my other website www.flickr.com/photos/karensenboutarath in the next few weeks, so check them out soon!
